About Rose Cooper

*First Bio Entry: May 2020
Hello!
Welcome to The Eloquent in the Room. I'm Rose. I'm a writer, actor and aspiring "Performance Art-ivist". I'm also The Late-Bloomer Poster Girl. I didn't dare attempt to be creative till, as a 30yo mum of two, I scored a writing diploma via correspondence. From 1992-2009, I freelanced for many varied Aussie publications, including Qantas Magazine, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Daily Telegraph but I really found my groove with (defunct) feminine empowerment title: Australian Women's Forum, (1991-2001), where I wrote regular features and for the final three years I was also their cheeky sex advice columnist. I often wonder where I'd be if that magazine never folded!
At the same time I had several pieces published in highly acclaimed Inside Sport - one being shortlisted for 1996 CUB Australian Sportswriter of the Year. (I know right; WTF?) Later that year I talked my way into a short stint 'work experience comedy writer' for Andrew Denton (for "Denton" on channel 7 in 1995 & the TripleM Breakfast Show in 1997). In 1998, with a third child on the way, I nabbed $20k from 2DayFM for winning a comedy writing competition, which was handy when I returned full-time to the mum-cave. In 2002 I found my voice - literally - in community theatre and never looked back, scoring several principal roles in eighteen musicals & some challenging roles in over a dozen plays. I also wrote, directed and/or acted in many short play festivals and appeared in several student and independent films. For eight years I acted professionally on the corporate scene for recruitment and WHS training. Which was fortunate, because click-bait, sensationalist journalism left me feeling disenfranchised from the media mainstream.
At the age of 49, I started another side-hustle, life-modelling for artists and photographers (as ya do) and launched my blog: Inside Rose. In 2014 - inspired by Amanda Palmer, I added "ukulele strumpet" to my patchwork resume. In 2017, one of my biggest achievements was to direct, produce, choreograph, act, fundraise and publicise a charity production of The Vagina Monologues for V-Day. We raised $11K for a high-school anti-domestic violence initiative. In August 2019, by far my craziest 'achievement' was to line up at the Iconic Nuyorican Poet's Cafe on Lower East Side, Manhattan for their renowned weekly open mic. In amongst a bill comprised of 95% gifted hip-hop and spoken word performers, I sang an original ditty about Foreplay! Now, just to challenge my anxiety even further, as of June 2020, inspired by Blindboy Boatclub - I'm a fucking podcaster! (**BIO Update - May 2021) the Podcast was officially launched in July 2020 - it's available on all platforms. So far I have covered topics such as female sexuality, orgasm, foreplay, sexuality, gender identity, consent, sexual assault (and the court system).
By the way, I've gone to great pains to list all this stuff, in order to say to you (yes, you):
YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD (or too anxious) TO TRY NEW THINGS.
Looking back on my meandering creative journey, I realise that in spite of the yammering little voice that kept telling me I'm not worthy, somehow I kept pushing my comfort zones. The Zeitgeist is hungry for hard truths and I'm certainly feeling a bit peckish myself. Trending hashtag by trending hashtag people are screaming for justice and compassion. Sometimes I'll approach things lightly, sometimes that will be impossible. Either way, I'll do my best to always keep it real. Keep checking the blog for project updates.
